BEFORE THEY HEADED off to locate the horses Harold stopped and took hold of Maeve’s arm. “Talking to MacCuill may kill two birds with one stone. He must know how to get your magic back.”

Maeve gazed at him bleakly. “I think if he did. he would have mentioned it while we were traveling. I would rather accept it than get my hopes up. Meg very clearly stated that there was no way.”

“There is always a way—how did you get your magic to begin with?”

Maeve shrugged. “The moonstone at first, then the werewolf root the healing goddess gave me, and then—I don’t know. It just seemed that one day I could move through the ether just by thinking where I wanted to go, and I could heal with my hands.”

Harold frowned, grabbing Argyll’s long tangled mane as they came close to where the horses grazed. “It was happening before you left home, Maeve. Remember your encounter in Milltown with the ravens? And what about your premonitions, the vision of me wearing a crown?”

“I was taking peyote at the time.”

He turned to stare at her, remembering back to their camping trip, the visions they both had—the strength Maeve exuded. “It was more than that. Whatever you had is part of you and can’t be removed by one bad member of the Fae.”

“I beg to differ. I feel different—kind of hollow and washed out.”

“Maybe it’s because the baby just drained you. You’ve hardly eaten in days. I’m surprised you had any milk to give her.”

Her expression darkened. “I didn’t. The only reason she was satisfied is because Rea fed her not long ago.”

They reached the horses and Harold gave her a leg up onto Pooka’s back. Once she was settled, he handed her up the pack they’d reconfigured into a papoose. Her moods seemed to shift like the wind, one minute up, the next minute down. She wasn’t herself. “Let’s go and talk with MacCuill. At least we’ll get a better idea what we’re up against.”

Maeve shrugged. “Whatever you think is best.”
